Good Sabbath

January 14, 2006

"To celebrate Sabbath is to share in holiness;
The presence of eternity, a moment of majesty,
The radiance of joy, enhancement of the soul

May we deepen our spirituality and expand our compassion
As we praise our Creator for the holiness of the Sabbath."

Frances feels better with her command of vocabulary returned. The problem is that her blood pressure is adventurous, traveling to highs and lows in the same day, which makes treatment as experimental as six prescriptions can deal with the mystery.

She tires more easily, but is still frisky (as she calls it). When I peek in on her, to check on her breathing and I see that wonderful face purring in peacefulness, I thank God for the many years we have shared and the eternity to come, though in no hurry for the two to meld.

Since I have been spending more time working and thinking at home, to stay close to my love, I reach into daily TV to note what goes on in a crazy world. I see a new term: "indigo children", labeling those with intelligence, empathy (far beyond their years) and impatience AND a consciousness far out of the ordinary in intuition, self confidence, resistance to authority, often labeled as with attention-deficit disorder.

I think I've met many as adults, with similar traits, which are the many characteristics we call "genius". We call it eccentric when adult, crazy when violent and individual when we don't quite understand, but still admire it from afar.

I like the term "indigo child" because it shows thoughtfulness and color, to say nothing of imagination. I believe that we need imagination to begin to comprehend how special each of us can be if we do not bore ourselves into normalcy. It is good to be different, to even appear eccentric, as long as we don't lust for power over others, or practice cruelty and unkindness to any one.

I believe that God wants us to approach life as a journey that travels the high and low roads of experience that cumulatively sculpt our souls and values, for life is chipping away at living while sculpting our souls out of those experiences, as if a block of clay, looking for what genius can uncover within it. It is there-the greatness and the wonder, but it requires searching for it until we discover why we were created. God says you are created to pursue justice, so don't be so busy that you forget it, "otherwise I shall forget you."

The TV is a box of wonders where we live 9/11 over and over again, wade through the floods of Noah-like proportions (Katrina), see how the poor struggle to make sense of it as they exist within the never-ending ignorance, arrogance and failure-to-learn beaurocracy, which is in charge of their lives (all of our lives).

"You cause the wind to blow and the rain to fall.
Your love sustains the living.
Your great mercies give life to the dead."

We watch as Supreme Court extends its supremacy over our lives, tyrants gain access to unthinkable destructiveness, executives forget ethics and morality as they claim guidance straight from some deity. We watch as fools become supreme and the "Supreme" falls into disrepair. We wonder our way through the maze of adventure called life. The opportunity is to discover what is placed before our eyes, open to our ordinary senses, and malleable to our possibilities of becoming extraordinary.

Take moments today to celebrate Sabbath, to pause to see and hear and feel, and to fill your soul with what it needs for sustenance-love.
