Good Sabbath
October 15, 2005
O God, is religion repetition or truth?
In the beginning, God created heaven and earth
And God looked down and saw that it was good.
And later, You looked down to see what Your creatures had been doing,
And You saw that it was bad;
God, was that our failure or had You created us knowing that we would fail?
Help us, O Lord; we are confused by our nature and Your millennial silence.
And then You created the generations of Noah, a man righteous
And whole-hearted; Noah walked with You, dear God.
After ten generations, from Adam to Noah
The earth was corrupt in Your eyes, filled with violence,
Only Noah found favor and grace with you, O Lord.
Tell us why, dear Lord, why?
Was this our failure or Your choice?
Had we become leaderless or rudderless?
And after the great flood and Noah's emergence from the great ark, You said to him:
"Come let us reason together; I need your counsel."
And Noah asked: "You, O Lord need my counsel?"
And You answered: "I have tasted failure for the first time; I need your counsel to assist Me in knowing what I must do next-to start all over again, perhaps with a new planet, a new humankind; what should I do."
And Noah answered, still in a state of shock:
"You are pure, dear God; You must know before any one, so You can think of what You wish us to be: how to act, what to become, how to approach the
Angels, how to be in your image, for only You have the wisdom and the power."
God disappeared for a very long time, after this, still giving humans the choices
And allowing the universe to evolve, hoping that humankind would become better than what He had destroyed, but unsure of the results, for He had to contend with the powerful mystery called Evil.
God knew the answer, but He couldn't seem to change the methodology
And so, once again, God looks down
And once again, He sees that it is bad and evil; and destruction is everywhere
And dozens of wars go on between man and man
And God thinks: "where is Noah when I need him; is Jonah still in the belly of the great fish?"
Have we all become Jobs?
Are we leaderless and rudderless?
We see earthquake, rain, flood and hurricane and the corruption of money and power
And now our scientists tell us of future pandemic-spread from birds!
Enough!!!!
O God of mystery
Where are You these days?
Is Your exodus from this planet permanent?
And do we pray to Someone so ancient that He and we have become irrelevant?
What areYour plans for us?
Can you let us know?
As we pray before You, with fear and faith overflowing our souls?
We need to see You, to hear You, Your expressions of love to us, for us, that we can see and hear--is this possibility or fable?
O God, we askYou to remember how human You made us.
If we were created in Your image, are You somewhat human Yourself-
or an ancient Star who guided our fathers
And then, faded from sight?
I stand before You trembling with memory and love Please try to make us understand the answer to the constant question: "why?"
Where are You these days?
Do You hide Your face in Your grief
As You watch pizza parlor explode, or bus blow up, or other tragedies that
engulf humankind?
You must weep, dear God, don't You?
But why always in silence?
At times we feel that You have forgotten us,
But please, dear God, please remember, that
We have not forgotten You!
Amen
