Sabbath Messages > Sabbath Message: May 14, 2005 Good SabbathMay 14, 2005 "We thank Thee, our Father, for the joy and gladness of the holy Sabbath." "Joys are our wings; sorrows our spurs." (Richter) If you cannot feel the pain of others than joy is a distant possibility. To care is the reason we humans were created-- not to pray to God nor to wait for rapture, but to care for one another--not to feel that it makes one a socialist to hope for medical cures based upon empathy for those in pain, whether rich or poor. Wealth is no cure for any thing except to be buried in a fancier coffin. The shroud makes all equal in the eyes of a caring God. My close friend Sara has lost her Dad and feels that her life is over. That shows how little she understands about the kindness of death after illness, the juncture between heaven and hope, the evolution of all from mortality into immortality, the presence of emerging soul from submerging life. The spirit and the soul combine--at the end of mortality--as they soar towards a God of love and kindness, our Teacher and Guide, throughout our brevity on Earth. Some people are so afraid to die that they forget to live. "It is impossible that something so natural, so universal, so necessary as death, should ever have been designed by God, as an evil."(Swift) Death is a temporary condition. At the moment of leaving, a baby is born somewhere. "When God wants an important thing done in this world, or wrong righted, He goes about it in a roundabout fashion. He doesn't let loose thunderbolts. He simply has a tiny baby born." (Margaret Applegarth) To be righteous is what we were born to be, why we were born in the first place, not for Wall Street to place a bet on the emerging child, but for the observer to again become excited about new hope, new child, new possibilities. No doctor or nurse ever was bored by bringing into life a fresh angel called baby.Yes, each child is born an angel, filled with the holy spirit of a caring God and a prayerful parent. The parent counts the fingers and toes and thanks God for a "normal" baby, while God thinks about what even one child, grown to adulthood, could accomplish if but hope evolved into action so that miracles were also brought to life. "Even for the sake of one righteous human the world was created, and for the sake of one righteous human it will continue." (Talmud) "Make it thy business to know thyself, which is the most difficult lesson in the world."(Miguel De Cervantes) I tilt with windmills only to practice my aim against tyranny. Life and love are intertwined, like god and His creations, so that they get to know each other and thus, together, create any miracle, every miracle. Too often, contemporary religions have forsaken God in the creation of new gods of intolerance . They treat hate and love as twins rather than separating hate from themselves and love in themselves. God demands two things of us: forgiveness and treatment of strangers as we would treat family, for we were all created to understand our total dependence upon each other. Tyranny and religion are related only by the intensity in our passion against each other, rather than continuing the creation of a better world. We continue what God began. As I walked this beautiful morning, I followed the flight and chatter of winged creatures, smiled with each blossom that shone "good morning", to me, felt no self-consciousness that I would think that a blossom winked at me, or that a tree--heavy with spring's gorgeous green leaves-- was meant just for me to share with you. I personalize nature because that is why God fashioned the world, to become personal, to each of us, so that we would leave it better than we found it. Make it better today; fill your life with love and kindness, and you will have created heaven on earth. sandy |
