Good Sabbath
October 16, 2004
"For Thou, O Lord, has made me rejoice in Thy work;
I will glory in the work of Thy hands."
(Psalm 92 for the Sabbath)
As I begin each day examining the works of God, traveling through the seasons so rapidly; the only way to slow them down is to walk among the blessings--the small miracles--noticing each and thanking God for them all: the thickened vines of Fall with deep green complementing Autumn's rusticity; the pine needles building next year's cones; the hedges turning from dark green to pale; yet the leaves of Spring and Summer still clinging to trees as senses wait for the beauty of Autumn's coloration.
Fran and I went to the Cirque de Soliel's "Cavilia", which they explained is the Portuguese word for horse (replacing the K with a C); this is where magnificent horses share the stage with humans, including trainers and other wonderful riders, where the stage settings were as creative as humans could imagine. Fran and I sat back to be entertained. Girls and women love horses so there were many in the large audience, fully appreciating this show. I had never fully noticed the marvelous variety of manes that flowed as the horses galloped in circles. In any language this was fun and to be appreciated.
Thank You, for the manes
The flow of nature
(which constantly surprises)
But only when we note the wonders
that surround our senses.
Now scientists begin to speak of planting chips in our brains so that we can be traced--both lost children and captured warriors--can one imagine what the terrorists would do to cut out chips if they suspected they were being traced?
God is the first "chip" implanted in so many minds; some chips filled with love that can be traced to parental sensitivity; some filled with religion that battles against anything it considers the infidel--not exclusive to one religion, as history teaches.
With what would we fill that chip? What should be implanted to reprise the Golden Rule each moment of our lives?
That is a miracle we could use, now!
"The truest mark of being born with great qualities, is being born without envy." (Rochefoucauld)
I could think of chips that might make us a better people, a better generation, perhaps one of the rare ones in which peace is revered as much as patriotism. Is it war that brings out the worse in humans or is it a peculiar compass of values implanted by religious narrowness that despises all others.
Or chips that replace politics, where repetition poses as knowledge, where big lies gather the minds of the unthinking, where "truth" hides behind professional spin so that 50% of the voters choose to not vote.
Nothing is as contagious as enthusiasm, except passion which floats on wings of rumor dehumanizing fellow humans. We have much to love on Earth without waiting to walk another planet; this is why we have eyes and ears and nostrils and mind--all God given.
"All extremes are error; the reverse of error is not truth, but error still. Truth lies between the extremes." (Cecil)
So my friends, take a walk this Sabbath and open your senses fully, even the blind can sniff, the deaf can see better, one sense deprived opens the other senses so that we can better appreciate what God lends our mortality. Each day begin with a walk to stay in touch with the beauty that the senses can heighten like frost does a blossom.
