Sabbath Messages | Sabbath Message: May 29, 2004 Good SabbathMay 29, 2004"Joy's recollection is no longer joy. while sorrow's memory is sorrow still." (Byron) May God's countenance shine upon those who gave their precious mortality to defend our country, though imperfect as we all are, at least we have created hope for all humans to be free. Liberty is the oxygen the soul requires to be creative and joyful. By the same token, the pursuit of justice is never ended, for our laws are more imperfect than we. We conduct wars for various reasons, when insulted, when attacked, when pursuing liberty, when angry, when thirsting for justice. Tyranny is a never defeated devil that hibernates when confronted, only to appear when it senses weakness and complacency--always the accompaniment to momentary success.. At the dawn of eternity, we will be measured by our kindnesses, our generosity, our pursuit of justice, our attention to what we believe are God's Commandments, for they are beautiful in theory and difficult to achieve in practice. When God reviews our pathways in life, He can trace all that was good and just, as in the circles inside a tree trunk. No matter how strong it appears, the circles tell of tempest, tragedy, conflict and triumph--if survival is triumph. "The memory has as many moods as the temper, and shifts its scenery like a diorama." (George Elliot) Bill Zures passed away quickly, after 52 vibrant years. He was the perfect human, imperfect; energetic in his love of family and life-partner. We mortals must be ready for the unexpected, for finality has no preannouncement, except that we have always been ruled by taxes and death. Therefore, the way we greet each daybreak is the pattern of that day, for we control so much of what we do, as Madam Fate gets the credit for it all. However, God knows the possibilities with which each of us has been blessed. for birth is the first miracle and death the passing of only mortality, not possibility. This weekend is the celebration of memory, of those who have passed on, and those who gave their lives in the pursuit of justice and liberty. They must remain forever in our souls and then we will collectively realize their possibilities. Hold memory dear, this Memorial Day, with those whom you love and have loved, sandy |
