Poetry > The Rear-View Mirror

Good Sabbath

May 2001

Driving the freeway this morning
I glanced in my rear-view mirror
and bearing down on me
was a huge SUV
Taller than I
Wider than I
Heavier than I
all put together with my car.

I felt afraid that I had discovered a fact of life,
that bullies are not just in school yards
or along the path from school.
They also populate and dominate the roads
Eating up expensive fuel
Eating up expensive roads
Devouring precious parking space
which could be used for otherwise.

Imagine, the planners give it space
on the road and in each parking lot
of each building built-
That's every building:
shopping center, doctor's office, school, home, work office-
for the same oversized bully of the neighborhood.
I ask you
Is that our culture
or our mistake?
