Poetry > Lily Pons

Good Sabbath

May 2001

When I was pre-teen age
And when I was a teenager
I really loved music, I devoted my ears to listening-
To discovering how notes could be assembled
in such a way
That they made sounds that glistened my heart.

I remember hearing Lily Pons sing
The notes were wondrous
and I asked my cousin Bubbles,
who is that?
She said Lily Pons and that's her famous "Bell song" from Lakme.
She said that Lily could hit high C beyond C
and that her voice was like a rare songbird's.

I bought the record eventually
and listened to it over and over
and never tired of the gorgeousness of this tiny lady-
tiny-but like my Grandmother-
a giant of talent and beauty.

This was really my first love-affair
and no puppy-love either,
for I was mature for my age
and quite grown-up-
grown up enough to learn to love the sounds of beauty--
higher and higher.
